My brain-dump on what alienates the progressive from the conservative, and vice versa
The average conservative fails to make their case compelling.
The average progressive fails to make their case reasonable.
Progs are driven exclusively by the beautiful and good (aesthetic plane)!
- The modern aesthetic has to do with cultural sensitivity and DE&I - inclusivity as the highest good. This is the definitive style of modernity. (see: diversity in film casts and fashion models)
- This is why progs tend to be younger. They grow up in touch with the modern aesthetic (what is 'cool'/socially praiseworthy). It defines their value set!
- So with the zest/creative flair of youth, they absorb and develop it further (on the aesthetic plane - art and culture).
Now, it is obvious that cons tend to be older (see, old white men).
- Seniors lose touch with, or arguably, lose confidence in the modern aesthetic.
- They see the extreme changeability of "the beautiful and good" over generations and find it unstable, unreliable, not trustworthy.
- But they recognise timeless truths learnt from experience i.e. they fall back on their superiority of reason/wisdom (ethical plane)!
- So when engaged in political conflict, their instinct is to defend and appeal to well-founded reason (see, "old men unwilling to change")
The older con complains: "what they are asking is not reasonable" (therefore, not good). But progs were never reasonable!
The young prog complains: "what they are asking for is not good" (therefore, not reasonable). But the conflict here is then - what is "good"?!?!
